ABRAHAMS, Peter. Dark Testament
ABRAHAMS, Peter. Dark Testament. London: George Allen & Unwin. 1942. Square 8vo. First edition. Publisher’s bright orange cloth lettered in black to the spine, in the dust jacket which goes uncredited. A very good copy, the cloth bright and clean, just gently bumped at corners. The binding tight and square, some light marks to textblock edges. The contents clean and fine but for a few light singular spots on occasion to text. The dust jacket price-clipped with struck-through sentence to front flap (by the publisher), a handful of tiny chips and nicks, some light overall grubbiness. Scarce.
The South African author’s first collection of short stories, written when aged just 23. The stories depict with brutal honesty the hardships faced by black men and women, their life, philosophy and routine in spite of their white masters. Abrahams today is perhaps best remembered for his Mine Boy (1946), considered a violent attack on racist capitalism and a cornerstone South African literary canon. In 2017, Abrahams was killed by the husband of his domestic helper, aged 97.
