BARON, Alexander. King Dido
BARON, Alexander. King Dido. London: Macmillan. 1969. 8vo. First edition. Publisher's red cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the excellent dust jacket by Vince Farrell. An about very good copy, the cloth clean and just very gently pushed at spine tips, the binding tight and square. The top edge dust-marked, other edges a trifle spotted. Ink ownership signature to the front endpaper, with some light and occasional spotting to the margins of prelims, very occasionally elsewhere, and otherwise bright and clean. The dust jacket price-clipped, the spine slightly faded, one triangular chip to rear panel top edge, and the corners and tips gently rubbed and creased with a couple of very tiny nicks, but certainly a respectable copy overall.
Considered one of Baron's best novels--this is his eleventh--, the novel unfolds in East End London and follows the rise and fall of Dido Peach, a local gangster. The front cover design, repeated on the rear, is just stunning. Scarce, and heading onto the unreachable shelf if no buyer comes forth.
