BEATON, Cecil. New York
BEATON, Cecil. New York. London: Batsford. 1938. 8vo. First edition. Publisher’s vibrant yellow cloth lettered in black to the spine and front board, in the really quite marvellous wraparound dust jacket designed by Beaton himself, the jacket stating Lippincott (the US edition appeared in the same year as the Batsford first) at the spine foot, and curiously without a price; neither the Batsford or Lippincott editions went into second impressions. Nevertheless a nice and sharp copy, the cloth bright, the spine panel not darkened as is often the case, the binding tight and very gently rolled. The topstain still bright and, despite a few spots to the fore-edge and a small handful within, usually fine. The dust jacket with some minor nicks to the corners, spine head and tail, some gentle rubbing along joints but a vibrant, complete copy overall.
Beaton’s famously colourful and often comedic portrait of New York, its breadth of cultures and diversity of its characters; he first travelled there in 1928 and made regular trips there throughout the 30s. A charming example overall.
