DE KETCHIVA, Paul. The Devil's Playground
DE KETCHIVA, Paul. The Devil’s Playground: Really behind the Scenes at Monte Carlo. London: Sampson Low. n.d., c. 1934. 8vo. First and only edition. Black cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. No dust jacket. An expose on the history of the ‘fool’s paradise’. “You can win a fortune in one coup—one spin of the roulette wheel—yet as surely as the world revolves on its axis so surely will you return one day to the tables, and lose that fortune—probably with interest.” A very good copy, the cloth a trifle marked in places, the spine panel s touch toned. The binding tight with a gentle lean, and a crack just starting to appear at the rear endpaper. Offsetting to the endpapers, some minor foxing to prelims including title page and elsewhere, but overall excellent. Scarce. Bookplate of Edwin A. Dawes to front pastedown, who was a biochemist at the University of Hull and the leading scholar on the history of magic.
