GIONO, Jean. The Hussar on the Roof
GIONO, Jean. The Hussar on the Roof. London: Museum Press. 1953. 8vo. First English language edition. Publisher's black cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the wonderfully vibrant dust jacket designed by Laurence Scarfe. An excellent example, the cloth clean and bright, the binding tight and square, the contents clean with a little offsetting to endpapers. The dust jacket unclipped (15/- net) with some shallow chips to the spine head, closed tear and creases to spine foot, but a very handsome example.
An intriguing title, whose American title published a year later was 'The Horseman on the Roof'. The novel itself is set, like much of Giono's work, in Provence, France, where Stendhalian hero, Angelo, scrambles for survival during the 1832 cholera epidemic. The dust jacket designer, Yorkshireman Laurence Scarfe, produced only a handful of jacket designs and the sense of panic and determination captured here is sublime. Scarce.
