JOHNSON, Dorothy M. Indian Country
JOHNSON, Dorothy M. Indian Country. London: Andre Deutsch. With a foreword by Jack Schaeffer. 1960. First British edition. 8vo. Publisher’s black cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the striking dust jacket designed by Bernard Blatch. A very good copy, the cloth clean and the binding tight and very gently rolled. The contents generally fine, the textblock edges a trifle darkened. The dust jacket unclipped (12s 6d net) with a few short tears and tiny nicks to the spine tips and some overall toning and very light spots.
Johnson’s collection of short stories in the traditional Frontier vein. Most notable of the collection here are her two most famous story, ‘A Man Called Horse’, which originally appeared in Collier’s magazine in 1950, and ‘The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance’, the former adapted to the screen in 1970 and starred Richard Harris, the latter starring John Wayne and James Stewart. The success of these adaptations ensured Johnson’s legacy in the genre. The wonderful Blatch jacket of quintessential design favoured by Deutsch at the time.
