JONES, Barbara. Design for Death. London: Andre Deutsch. 1967 4to. First edition. Publisher’s purple cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the striking dust jacket designed by the author. Ruari McLean’s copy with his bookplate to the front pastedown beneath the front flap. Also published in the US by Bobbs-Merill, this true first significantly scarcer.

A wonderfully macabre production by Jones, probably her second most famous book, on the tasteful design of all things death. Illustrated throughout with concepts of coffins, hearses, flowers, , headstones, typography and the like. Just marvellous!

A fine copy, the cloth clean and bright, the purple topstain still vivid, the corners perhaps a trifle bumped. The binding tight and square, the contents clean and fresh throughout. The dust jacket fine, unclipped (63s net) and complete without tears. Very lightly kinked to corners, but a splendid copy. With two cuttings loosely inserted by McLean on funerary architecture and graveyards.
