JONES, Gwyn. Garland of Bays

£40.00

JONES, Gwyn. Garland of Bays. London: Victor Gollancz. 1938. 8vo. First edition. Publisher’s black cloth with gilt lettering to spine, in the typical Gollancz yellow jacket with pink title section and priced at 10/6 net to the spine segment.

A novel set in Elizabethan England and Italy. Jones is perhaps best remembered for his contribution to Welsh literature in general, and his medievalist translations. A socialist and conscientious objector during the Second World War, his 30s novels in particular often focus on working-class and/or rural life in Wales; he was the son of a miner and a midwife. He also founded the Welsh Review which attracted many at-the-time unknown writers to submit work, most notably, J. R. R. Tolkien.

A near fine book, the cloth clean and the gilt bright, the binding tight and square, the textblock edges with a handful of faint spots only. The contents fine throughout. The dust jacket complete, some faint discolouration as per the usual Gollancz jacket, with a few shallow chips and nicks to the corners and tips. A pleasing copy overall.
