LEHMANN, John. New Writing: New Series 1-3

£125.00

New Writing: New Series 1-3, Autumn 1938, Spring 1939, and Christmas 1939. Ed. John Lehmann. London: The Hogarth Press. 8vos. First editions. Lehmann’s excellent New Writing series, this preceded by New Writing (1936-38) and succeeded by Folios of New Writing (1940-41) before it became New Writing and Daylight and Penguin New Writing. Orig. cloth in dust jackets, coloured topstains. Lehmann focused on offering both new and established authors a platform to write new poetry, fiction and non-fiction, with a general focus on Leftist authors with strong anti-fascist views. Contributors here include W. H. Auden, V. S. Pritchett, Bertolt Brecht, Jean-Paul Sartre, Tom Wintringham, Jim Phelan, George Orwell, Rex Warner, Stephen Spender and many more. Condition: Very good in good to very good dust jackets. Cloth boards a trifle toned at edges, but the bindings tight and square and presumably unread. Matching ink inscription to each front pastedown, with some toning and scattered foxing to prelims, but then often fine throughout despite some foxing to textblock edges. Jackets unclipped, with some light chips to spine tips and corners, a few small closed tears and spines a little darkened and stained, but an overall very good set and rather scarce.
