INSANITY & MENTAL ILLNESS. Link. 24 issues.

£200.00

Link. February 1982 - January 1984. 24 volumes, some duplicates. Softcover stapled wraps. A monthly in-house magazine with contributions from the residents of an asylum. An intriguing collection of poetry, prose, short stories, whimsies, sketches and often seemingly banal incidents and anecdotes of life within the walls of High Royds Hospital Menston, more colloquially named the West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum. The hospital closed in the early 2000s, but it is still well-known today, not least for it being the first hospital dedicated purely to the mental health of the poor. The contents vary extensively, but many contributions read like B. S. Johnson’s experimental prose. Written by and for the residents, the print run, then, presumably, in double digits. Many of these from the possession of the ‘Head Gardener’ with associated ink ownership names to several. Some handling marks but generally in excellent order. Scarce.
