LOVECRAFT, H. P. At the Mountains of Madness and other novels of terror
LOVECRAFT, H. P. At the Mountains of Madness and other novels of terror. Selected, and with an Introduction by August Derleth. London: Gollancz. 1971. 8vo. Second impression. Publisher’s burgundy cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the Gollancz dust jacket. With an original Foyles sales receipt from publication. A fine copy, the cloth clean, the binding tight and square, the contents clean and without issue, no stamps or inscriptions but for small Foyles bookshop label to front pastedown. The dust jacket unclipped (£2.00 net) and fine, with a couple of very faint and minor indentations.
An exceptional copy of this collection of novellas and novelettes by Lovecraft which cement the Cthulhu Mythos. The titular story, one of his more famous, was originally written in the late 20s and, unlike much of his short stories, was rejected by Weird Tales magazine due to its length—a mere 100 pages. It was instead serialised. The first British edition appeared in 1966 and this second printing came five years later. Scarce in such splendid condition.
