sold out

MCLEAN, Ruari. Victorian Publisher's Bindings in Cloth and Leather. No publisher. 1972. Casebound and backed. Large 8vo. Titles at front pastedown, title page in ink in author's hand. 143pp. Paginated by McLean. Paper cuttings pasted in to each page -- a few loose. The cloth a little marked, but nevertheless charming.

The artist's own project, a collection of over 120 paper cuttings of examples of leather and original cloth bindings, each dated with brief notes. McLean's knowledge of the history of the book and, especially, Victorian book production was well-documented, evidently leaving him in good stead for his own typographic and graphic work. The volume is both a celebration of Victorian book production and a glimpse into the meticulous nature of McLean's techniques.
