MCNEILL, Florence Marian. Hallowe'en: Its Origin, Rites and Ceremonies in the Scottish Tradition. Illustrated by John Mackay. Edinburgh: The Albyn Press. 1970. 8vo. First edition. Publisher's blue cloth lettered in silver gilt to the spine, in the excellent dust jacket also designed by Mackay. A near fine copy, the cloth clean and bright, the binding tight and square, the contents clean, bright and fine but for a neat ink ownership signature to the front endpaper. The dust jacket complete, unpriced, with some tiny bumps and rubbing to some corners and around spine head, but a sharp and desirable copy overall.

Though the contents of the book -- the history of witches, fairies, burning, and all the customs that come with that most splendid of celebrations -- are highly appealing in their own right, the author herself is just as intriguing. A lifelong folklorist, writing many works on witches and their history, she was also a suffragist, served for the Scottish Women's Hospital during the First World War, and published numerous volumes on Scottish culinary dishes.
