NORMAN, Bruce. Late of London Wall
NORMAN, Bruce. Late of London Wall. London: Arrowsmith. 1931. 8vo. First edition. Publisher’s dark green cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the dust jacket. Publisher’s file copy with ‘file copy’ sticker to spine panel. A sharp copy overall, spine head and tail gently bumped, the binding tight and square though front hinge starting, perhaps with bookplate removal here. The contents otherwise fine throughout. The dust jacket unclipped and complete, though evidently stored away from the book, with three vertical creases to spine and front panels, and front flap.
Bruce Norman was a pseudonym of Norman Denny, who wrote various novels, children’s books, and several French to English translations. This appears to be one of his earliest works. The Spectator called it “a sound, readable novel about an ordinary business man who, having made money, retires and sets about the new and more perplexing business of enjoying it.” His later works under this pseudonym were mystery thrillers, and this bridges the gap, ending in Paris where he lived for a while.
