ORWELL, George. The Lion and the Unicorn: Socialism and the English Genius. London: Secker and Warburg. 1962. 8vo. First reset edition. Publisher’s green cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the dust jacket designed by Denis Piper. A near fine copy, the cloth clean and bright, the binding tight and square, with a couple of spots to the textblock top edge, the contents fine but for a little offsetting to endpapers, minor. The dust jacket price-clipped with publisher’s reprice sticker (15/-), the spine a trifle faded, the corners and tips gently bumped with a couple of tiny closed tears. Faint circular stain to front panel. A sharp copy.

An excellent polemical work written during the Blitz of 1940. The work includes Orwell’s ‘England your England’, with one of the author’s greatest first lines, ‘As I write, highly civilized human beings are flying overhead, trying to kill me”. As with all Denis Piper-jacketed Orwells, uncommon.
