REID, Forrest. The Retreat
REID, Forrest. The Retreat. London: Faber and Faber. 1936. 8vo. First edition. Publisher's red cloth lettered in silver gilt to the spine, in the atmospheric dust jacket by Cyril Walter Hodges. A very good book, the cloth clean, gently bumped along spine foot, the binding tight and gently rolled. The contents usually fine, with a bookplate beneath the front flap, and Reid's obituary pasted in to front endpaper. The dust jacket price-clipped, with some light closed tears and tiny nicks to edges, very small archival tape repair to verso, the corners also gently bumped. To rear flap a central stain and some rather charming pencil notes which, though could be easily removed, have here been left unaltered. They read 'Things to do // arrange history // get French hand book" etc.
Reid's second book in his mature Tom Barber trilogy, in which a young boy blends reality and fantasy in an eerie world. The cat shown on the dust jacket is the indomitable Henry, whom Tom has seen scratch cabbalistic symbols into surfaces. The trilogy is considered Reid's crowning glory. He died with much critical authority, but without much of the literary fanfare some of his contemporaries achieved. His works are currently being republished.
