TROCCHI, Alexander. Cain's Book
TROCCHI, Alexander. Cain's Book. London: Calder. 1963. 8vo. First edition. Publisher’s red cloth lettered in silver gilt to the spine, in the dust jacket based on a sculpture by Trocchi. A near fine copy, the cloth clean, with a couple of minor bumps to the board edges. Binding tight and square, with some spots to the textblock edges but seldom seeping, the contents fine otherwise. The dust jacket unclipped (25s net) and complete, a couple of tiny nicks but clean overall, the spine panel not darkened as is usually the case.
An excellent example of the Scottish beat writer’s ‘junkie in New York’ roman-à-clef. Originally published by Olympia in 1960, this British publication was the subject of an obscenity trial and Trocchi held a public burning of his book come the verdict.
